Revisiting Super Bowl 53 Futures
By now, you know the real contenders to raise a Vince Lombardi trophy at seasons end are the Chiefs, Patriots, Rams, and Saints. So which one will it be? Save your money and put down futures money on these two teams only. Find out here!
With only three weeks remaining in the 2018 NFL regular season, now is the time to revisit those 2019 Super Bowl futures you made before the season (or didn't). At this stage, the playoff picture is practically set and teams are who they are.
Below are the top-five teams with the best odds to win Super Bowl 53, per Bovada:
- New Orleans Saints (+300)
- Los Angeles Rams (+315)
- Kansas City Chiefs (+500)
- New England Patriots (+700)
- Chicago Bears (+900)
It's become evident that the aforementioned group is a clear cut above the rest of the NFL. Of course, having five good options does you no good when making future wagers. After doing the research, we've dwindled the list of contenders down to two, and either one would be smart money to win it all come February.
New Orleans Saints (+300)
For most, picking who comes out of the NFC between the Saints and Rams feels like a coin toss. Not us, though.
At the end of the day, this comes down to which head coach-quarterback combo do you trust more: Sean McVay and Jarred Goff or Sean Payton and Drew Brees? When you look at it that way, there's really no question New Orleans, with its wealth of experience, is more primed for a Super Bowl run.
What's more, Los Angeles was exposed badly in a 15-6 loss on Sunday to Chicago. They gave up 194 yards on the ground, pushing its run defense to bottom-10 in the NFL — whereas the Saints rank number one in the same category. Surely, Payton can drum up some plays with his two-headed monster of Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram to mimic the Bears run-game success if they meet again in the NFC title game.
And thanks to a head-to-win over Los Angeles earlier this season, that potential conference championship game is slotted to be in the Super Dome (if the Saints win out), where New Orleans is almost unbeatable. All things considered, the Saints make way more sense than the Rams for Super Bowl futures.
Kansas City Chiefs (+500)
Like the previous example, you could compare coach-quarterback pairings and make an educated guess on the eventual AFC champion — Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes or Bill Belichick and Tom Brady?
Unless you're insane, everyone and their mother is picking the duo that already has five Super Bowl rings. However, that simple comparison comes with a lot of caveats. Whereas the Rams and Saints are very even in talent level, there's a gulf between the Patriots and Chiefs, with the clear advantage going to Kansas City.
New England's defense is flat-out slow, hence how they gave up a 69-yard hook-and-lateral with time expiring to Miami in a losing effort. On offense, Brady is throwing to a bunch of schmucks. Rob Gronkowski is a shell of himself. Julian Edelman is a step slower since his ACL injury. It's gotten so bad that New England's top pass catcher right now is actually running back.
But enough about the Patriots' fall from grace, Kansas City is the real deal, too. It's not hyperbolic to say Mahomes might be the most gifted quarterback to ever step on a football field. Every week, he one-ups himself with a hurl only he can seem to make. Reid has a history of coming up short in the postseason, but with Mahomes, he finally has a transcendental signal caller to get him over the hump.
