2021 World Series Preview
Houston winning the American League should be a little surprise to bettors. Since the start of the season, the Astros have been favorites to advance in the American League — and they did so by dispatching the Red Sox in six games in the ALCS. This is now their third appearance in the Fall Classic in five years, however, this team is built differently than those of the past.
Unlike years past, the Astros don't possess dominant starting pitching. In the ALCS, its starter was chased off the mound before the fifth inning four times out of six. Going into the World Series, it's expected that Houston's ace thrower, Lance McCullers Jr., will remain out with an injury.
But what they lack in pitching, Houston has made up in hitting. Big time. Up and down its lineup, the Astros have a hitter that should be feared. The result of that has been scoring more runs than any MLB team during the regular season and on top of that, tacking on at least five runs in all 10 of their postseason games minus one.
While Houston has a bit of the "been there, done that" attitude, the opposite could be said of Atlanta. This is its first World Series appearance since 1999. To get here, the Braves took six games to top the Dodgers — the reigning champions that have been THE championship favorites since day one.
As a team, Atlanta is more well-rounded than Houston. Though, its pitching has carried it into this series more than anything else. They had one bad outing versus Los Angeles, allowing 11 runs. But remove that game from the equation and the Braves have given up a mere 22 runs in nine postseason outings. Not bad at all.
Betting Pick To Win 2021 World Series
We're giant believers in the theory of "getting hot at the right time." Sports performance — whether it's baseball, football, or an Olympic sport — ebbs and flows. The trick is matching the peaks with crunch-time moments. Right now, the Braves are peaking at the absolute right time.
Here's Atlanta's record since August (including the playoffs): 43-22. That's a winning percentage of 66, folks. Better yet, the Braves are 19-5 in its last 24 games. Aside from a few bad innings versus LA in the NLCS, Atlanta largely manhandled them, the perceived best roster in baseball in spite of the Dodgers' health woes.
On paper, the Astros certainly have the more talented team. They're also much more experienced in these big-game situations. If you're going to wager with Houston, both of those reasons are completely valid and likely why they're betting favorites to win it all.
However, we greatly value the Braves' momentum heading into this championship clash. Not only that, but we do believe its pitching staff can contain Houston's offense, as they did against Los Angeles. We probably don't need to remind of the age-old saying, "pitching wins games in October." It does and Atlanta's starting pitching is far more trustworthy right now. So yes, we're betting the Braves to pull off the upset!
2021 World Series Prop Betting Pick
You'll want to take a look at the prop betting market this time of year. It's overflowing with betting action with so much attention on the World Series. One of our personal favorite props is the series correct score. This bet is difficult but highly lucrative. Below are the current betting lines for all possible series outcomes:
Series Outcome | |
---|---|
Braves 4-0 | +1600 |
Braves 4-1 | +650 |
Braves 4-2 | +550 |
Braves 4-3 | +550 |
Astros 4-0 | +1100 |
Astros 4-1 | +550 |
Astros 4-2 | +375 |
Astros 4-3 | +400 |
While we're backing the Braves to win, it won't come easy. Houston's bats won't go quietly into the night and can single-handedly extend this series, which is our exact guess as to what happens. In a seven-game classic, Atlanta escapes with the thinnest of wins.
We wouldn't advise laying a huge bet on this prop, certainly nowhere near the range of the aforementioned series winner wager. But then again, you shouldn't have to. At long +550 odds, even a small risk can turn into a big reward.
