2022 Monte-Carlo Masters Recap
Recapping what’s already happened at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters feels necessary. Remember earlier when we said the tourney has been wild this far? Well, that’s because it’s been filled with one upset after another.
The biggest one was Novak Djokovic. The world's number-one ranked player returned to the ATP court for the first time since February. Ready to put his vaccine controversy behind him, Djokovic flat-lined in Monaco. In the round of 32, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ranked No. 46 worldwide) toppled Djokovic 6-3, 6-7, 6-1. It feels like Djokovic was suffering from the classic case of playing rust, which will likely last beyond this event in case you’re thinking of betting on him at upcoming matches.
And then there’s Felix Auger-Aliassime. The world’s number-nine-ranked player was bounced in two sets during the same round by Lorenzo Musetti, who is ranked No. 83. For Auger-Aliassime, the cold streak continues. He’s now won just once over his last four tournaments. Like Djokovic, Auger-Aliassime is also betting fade material for the foreseeable future.
The Monte-Carlo Masters field was already light before the event even got underway. That’s because a who’s-who list or players were missing in action entirely. The no-go list includes Rafael Nadal (an 11-time champion at this event), Dominic Thiem, Matteo Berrettini, and Daniil Medvedev. After all, that’s transpired, the remaining tourney real feels wide-open, but as you’re about to find out, there are some players with clear paths to victory.
Best Bets To Win 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters
Alright, we’re going to be making not one but two bets to win the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters. There are sixteen players left in championship contention, which is still an awfully a lot, and as we mentioned, it’s been an unpredictable draw so far. Therefore, two separate bets act as a sort of “risk management.” Here are the two players we like MOST in the field:
Casper Rudd
There’s a TON to like about Rudd right now. He’s riding momentum from a finals berth in the ATP Masters 1000 in Miami (a first for his career after topping out in the semis three different times). That performance has inched him up to No. 7 in the world rankings and best of all, the clay courts during this European stretch of the season suit him well. Rudd has six career titles on these same clay courts. Six!
Moreover, Rudd was a higher performer a year ago at this very event. In the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, Rudd reached the semi-finals, before bowing out to Andrey Rublev. But we’re of the belief that Rudd is vastly improved since then. And just as importantly, he has the mental confidence needed to win out. Once betting lines are re-posted, we’d strongly vouch for Rudd as your choice.
Stefanos Tsitsipas
Earlier we spoke about Rudd’s 2021 success in Monaco, but do you know who won the actual tournament? Yep, it was Tsitsipas, who beat Rublev with relative ease, 6-3 and 6-3 again. Could the Greek repeat this year? We’re betting that he can.
Tsitsipas had a strong showing in the round of 32. He easily dispatched Fabio Fognini — a 2019 winner of this event — in straight sets of 6-3, 6-0. And as a whole, he’s been a high performer during the 2022 season. That includes a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open and the final at Rotterdam. No, he hasn’t won, but he’s knocking on the door. In a wide-open field and his history of success here, we can foresee Tsitsipas going back to back. Bet on him with confidence here!
