Breeders' Cup Classic Betting Prediction
All three Triple Crown winners are expected to race come November 7. That includes frontrunner Tiz The Law (Belmont Stakes), Authentic (Kentucky Derby), and Swiss Skydiver (Preakness Stakes). These horses, along with the rest of the field, will be duking it out for $6 million in prize money.
True to form, you need to analyze the field by identifying which thoroughbreds are trained by Bob Baffert. The all-timer is always in the thick of big-time events (including a three-peat at this race from 2014-16) and we expect the 2020 Classic to be no different. Three of the top contenders — the aforementioned Authentic, Improbable, and Maximum Security — belong to the Hall of Famer.
Of the bunch, we actually like Authentic's chances most despite all the hype Improbable has. The three-year-old Authentic has finished tops in five of seven career races, with the two outliers being runner-ups (one of which was this year's Preakness). Maybe it's just us, but there's a measure of comfort when a horse has NEVER run a bad race.
Authentic will have stiff competition from Tiz The Law, the same horse he edged out at the Kentucky Derby. Similarly, Tiz The Law has brought it every race he's ever entered. In eight career outings, he's won six and placed second and third in the other two. Perhaps not coincidentally, both non-winning races were at Churchill Downs.
But here's why we favor Tiz The Law over Authentic — he's fresher. Tiz The Law skipped the Preakness a month ago in anticipation of this event. We believe trainer Barclay Tagg will have Tiz The Law peaking at the right time as he's our Breeders' Cup Classic pick.
Betting pick to make: Tiz The Law (+300)
Breeders' Cup Mile Betting Prediction
We love this race from a pure value perspective. On the weekend, it's one of the most wide-open races, which is reflected in the betting odds. For instance, here are the wagering favorites, per BetOnline:
- Kameko (+450)
- Ivar (+600)
- Uni (+600)
- Raging Bull (+700)
- Four-way tie among five horses all at +1200 odds
Hit on this bet and you can make a killing — where else can a favorite go off at +450 odds? But of course, that's easier said than done, especially when it's such an up-in-the-air contest.
Any preview of this race has to start with the reigning champion Uni. She — yes she — topped the boys' a year ago and is seeking a repeat performance. This century alone, that feat has only been accomplished twice, Goldvika's three-peat in 2008-10 and Wise Dan in 2012 and 2013.
Kameko will likely be her biggest challenger. The one-mile leg really suits Kameko as two of three defeats this year for the horse came in events with a 1-and-a-half and 1-and-fifth-sixteenths miles. Of course, Kameko turned heads earlier this year with a record-setting win at the 2,000 Guineas.
Once again with this race, we're siding with the betting favorite, Kameko. At such steep odds, that's a bang-for-your-buck pick if ever one.
Betting pick to make: Kameko (+450)
Filly & Mare Spring Betting Prediction
This competition is the complete anti-thesis of the Breeders' Cup Mile. In the eyes of most, this is a three-horse race between the following standouts:
- Gamine (+175)
- Serengeti Empress (+330)
- Bell's The One (+550)
Gamine will be one of the weekend's biggest favorites at +175. Another horse of the Baffert, Gamine has claimed three first-place finishes in five outings in 2020. But that's not been without controversy as the horse has failed not one, but two drugs test this season.
Moreover, Gamine looked mortal in her last race. Back in September, she finished third in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, another event she entered as the gambling favorite. That's why we're breaking our trend and not picking the frontrunner to win outright this time around.
If not Gamine, then who? We're going with Serengeti Empress. This event will be her final before being retired and bred next year, per her trainer Tom Amoss. Welp, she's going out with a bang.
There's just a speed and single-mindedness that Serengeti Empress runs with that that we like a lot. That's been mostly on display in six races she's logged this year. In such events, she's won two, finished second in two more, a fourth-place finish, and one bad outlier 11th finish. This time around, we're betting with a storybook ending in mind for Serengeti Empress.
Betting pick to make: Serengeti Empress (+330)
If you're looking for betting odds on all 14 races during the weekend, then the below bookies can help you out. Lines will fluctuate from now and until race time — especially if there are last-minute scratches. Locking in a bet now or waiting can help or hurt your chances. Either way, these betting sites have you covered on all things Breeders' Cup.
