Haskell Invitational Handicapping
Now that you have made your online betting account, it is time to delve into the field in the Haskell. These are the horses with the best chance to make an impact in Monmouth Park’s flagship horse race!
Haskell Invitational Favorites
Though he will probably be favored, Taiba appears tough to beat in the Haskell. He has tactical speed, and he was a dazzling winner at this distance in the Santa Anita Derby (G1). Though his inexperience bit him in the Kentucky Derby, now he has that behind them and cuts back to a proven trip, with perennial Haskell winners Bob Baffert and Mike Smith in his corner.
Jack Christopher, the other horse likely to vie for favoritism, is a bet-against. Though he has won all four of his starts impressively, all of those came at one turn. Now he stretches all the way to nine furlongs despite being bred on both sides to sprint. Betting a race like this becomes profitable when you can take a stand against a short-priced horse, and the smart bet is that Jack Christopher does not want nine furlongs.
White Abarrio and Cyberknife are the other Grade 1 winners in the field, and both of them got their top-level wins at the same distance as the Haskell. White Abarrio is preferred since he has a cleaner post draw and his last-out second in the Ohio Derby (G3) came against a stronger field than Cyberknife’s win last out. However, both have tactical speed and a strong chance of finding the frame.
Haskell Invitational Value Horses
Howling Time, the horse Cyberknife nosed out in the Matt Winn (G3) last month, is going the right way and will be a significantly longer price than the horse who edged him out. He has to prove that he can bring his best game away from Churchill Downs, but with his tactical speed and his strong distance pedigree, he is an excellent choice for exotic wagers.
Among the real outsiders, Benevengo has the most going for him. Though he was well beaten in his only stakes outing, that was also his only career start over a sloppy track. He is undefeated in three starts over a fast track, and all of those have come against the lesser company; he ran well enough in his last-out allowance win at Monmouth to only require a modest jump to find the frame here.
