The Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita Park features some of the best and most lucrative betting horse races of the year, and one of the best is the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Saturday, November 4. The 1 ⅛-mile race draws the best two-turn dirt fillies and mares in the world, and it is a wagering opportunity you do not want to miss!
The likely favorite is Idiomatic, a newer face in the distaff division who has risen to the top in her last two starts. However, she faces her deepest field of foes yet. Her competition includes perennial distaff-division star Clairiere, Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous, the consistent Search Results, and many more.
Who will join a list of winners that includes stars like Personal Ensign, Zenyatta, and Beholder? Keep reading to find out!

Keep in mind that those odds are not guaranteed prices if you bet at the track. They can be a useful handicapping tool, since they offer suggestions of which horses are expected to take money or not, so you can compare those to the actual odds as the race gets closer. However, if you play at the track, you don’t know your price until the gates spring open.
There is a better way: betting the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at an online sportsbook! Since online sportsbooks offer fixed-odds betting, you can lock in your price just by placing a bet when you see an overlay on your horse. That way, you can watch the race confident that you are getting the best odds on the race.

Breeders' Cup Distaff Contenders
Idiomatic will be the favorite in the Distaff, but sometimes the favorite just looks like the right horse and this is one of those times. Though there is a lot of speed drawn into this race, she has shown that she can be tractable, and should be able to get a good trip just behind the pace. Her post is good, her recent strength of schedule is the best, and the distance is perfect for her.
Pretty Mischievous, the Kentucky Oaks winner, faces older horses for the first time in the Distaff. She has tried a range of distances this year, but she handled nine furlongs well when she won the Oaks and should be ready to tackle that distance again second after a freshening. Expect her to be running late, and if anyone tags Idiomatic on the line, she looks the most likely candidate.
Breeders' Cup Distaff Exotics Horses
Clairiere has yet to win the Distaff, but she has been beaten less than a length in each of the last two editions of the race. She may not get all the way there, especially over a Santa Anita track that often favors frontrunners, but she will get a hot pace to close into. Plus, she bounced back from a disappointing Personal Ensign (G1) last year as well, showing trainer Steve Asmussen’s ability to get her in form for this spot;
The two west-coasters to consider include Desert Dawn and Adare Manor. Adare Manor is the current leader of the west-coast division, but she’ll be a short price and given her lower strength of schedule and all the other speed it makes sense to tread lightly. Desert Dawn has made a whole career of getting underneath shares as a long shot, and with a hot pace up front she could run on late to do that again.
