Kentucky Derby Best Bet
Burnham Square is the best bet for the Kentucky Derby. He had a strong prep season, with wins in both the Holy Bull (G3) and the Blue Grass (G1). Though he only narrowly won that final prep, he reeled in a lone leader that day. He won’t have to reel in a lone leader – instead, he should have a multi-way pace battle in front of him, making it a better setup.
And, though he is a closer, he has proven he does not have to set as far back as some of the deeper closers to run a good race. That gives Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr. options from a good gate draw.
Kentucky Derby Favorites
In every important market the Kentucky Derby favorite is Journalism, winner of the Santa Anita Derby (G1). He beat a strong West Coast crop of three-year-olds over and over again, even with a troubled trip in his final prep. He has the tactical speed to keep out of a likely fiery pace battle, and he is a deserving Kentucky Derby favorite.
Sovereignty is the second choice on the morning line, and he also figures strongly. The Bill Mott trainee won the Fountain of Youth (G2) and ran a credible second in the Florida Derby (G1), a race for which he didn’t have to be fully cranked. His closing style will get the right setup with so much speed drawn in. And, Churchill is no question – he already won the Street Sense (G3) last year over the course, so the footing suits him fine.
Kentucky Derby Bet-Againsts
It’s a big deal that Bob Baffert is back in the Kentucky Derby after a three-year suspension. He has two runners, Rodriguez (who is getting a bit of buzz) and Citizen Bull (the juvenile champion of 2024). The problem is, both Rodriguez and Citizen Bull are unproven as anything but one-way speed. And, they’re not the only ones with that problem.
This means, even though Bob Baffert has more Kentucky Derby wins than any active trainer, both of his horses are clear bet-againsts in 2025.
Kentucky Derby Longshots
Chunk of Gold comes into the run for the roses off of a pair of second-place finishes in prep races in Louisiana. He was second in both of those outings, but the late-running style will get the right setup in Kentucky. His under-the-radar connections help the price – though jockey Jareth Loveberry did give his mount a great ride the only other time he rode in the Kentucky Derby, when he guided Two Phil’s to second place in 2023.
Grande is also worth a look for the exotics. Trained by hall of famer Todd Pletcher and ridden by fellow hall of famer John Velazquez, Grande doesn’t have as much experience as his opponents but has already shown good tactical versatility. He has an appealing pedigree for the stretch out to the Derby distance, and if he keeps moving forward he should be a threat in the lane.
