We’re four games away from the end of the 2022 NFL regular season — and the MVP award still hangs in the balance. For an up-to-date pick on the 2022 MVP winner, read this right now. We have an in-depth breakdown of the player prop bet for you right here.
2022 NFL MVP Betting Pick
Before we go any further, we need to take a gander at the 2022 NFL MVP odds. These are changing by the week, but as of this writing (before Week 15), the top-used NFL betting sites have pegged these players as favorites to win the award:
We’ll be offering two different picks for the MVP award. One is our “safe” choice. If you’re betting money is limited, it’s best to just back this player. However, if your wallet can afford it, we also have a riskier choice that’s worth “doubling up on.” Here’s the two players we’re backing with bets for NFL MVP:
Player | ||
---|---|---|
Jalen Hurts | -165 | -165 |
Patrick Mahomes | +185 | +185 |
Joe Burrow | +800 | +800 |
Tua Tagovailoa | +3000 | +3000 |
Justin Jefferson | +10000 | +10000 |
Tyreek Hill | +10000 | +10000 |
Safe Betting Choice
Given the odds listed above, there are only two players that can be deemed safe bets here — Hurts or Mahomes. Both have separated themselves from the pack in the MVP race. But of the two, who’s the better choice?
It would be useful to know how each player will end the season. Hurts the Eagles will play the Bears, Cowboys, Saints, and Giants to close out the year. The Mahomes-led Chiefs will finish with the Texans, Seahawks, Broncos, and Raiders. As you can see, both have relatively easy schedules left.
To us, this MVP vote comes down to one game above all: Philly at Dallas on December 24. That Christmas Eve matchup will have ALL the eyeballs, especially from the national media (who largely votes on this MVP award). Hurts can not afford to underperform in that critical matchup. If he does, his MVP chances are substantially hurt (pun intended).
Our money says Hurts doesn’t have his MVP moment in that division game. Here’s why: Hurts played mediocre in the two’s previous matchup this year. Back in mid-October, Hurts went 15-of-25 for 155 yards passing and two touchdowns. He added 27 yards rushing too. The Eagles won 26-17 at home, but it was a modest game from Hurts. It also came against a Dak Prescott-less Cowboys team. With Dak back and the game now in Dallas, that type of performance from Hurts likely won’t do again.
Therefore, we’re betting on Mahomes to add a second MVP trophy to his resume. He’s facing three bottom-10 defenses (Houston, Las Vegas, and Seattle) the rest of the way and should carve them up with ease. Playing for a No. 1 seed still, we can’t imagine Mahomes and Kansas City letting up despite the easy schedule.
Risky Betting Choice
There's a darkhorse MVP candidate worth putting money on. It's not Tagovailoa, who has played himself out of MVP contention with back-to-back bad games. It's not wide receivers Jefferson and Hill either. The MVP is a QB's award (only four non-QBs have won the award this century; none of them being wide-outs). That leaves us with Joe Burrow, who is ascending into MVP consideration as of late.
Burrow is up to 3,685 yards passing, 27 touchdowns, only 9 interceptions, and a passer rating of 102.4 this season. Much of that stat total was compiled with star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase being out with an injury for over a month. But more importantly, the Bengals are winning. They've rallied off eight straight wins after a rough 1-4 start, and Burrow is behind the surge.
Like we did with Hurts and Mahomes, we have to consider how Cincinnati ends the season. They have a pretty solid list of opponents in the Buccaneers, Patriots, Bills, and Ravens — all four of which are fighting for playoff spots. If Burrow can muster a herculean effort in the final stretch, he could leapfrog Mahomes and Hurts for the MVP. In particular, that matchup versus Buffalo is the one to circle. Burrow will have the benefit of playing that one at home, and if he can outduel Josh Allen in it, his MVP chances shoot up. To us, it's worth taking Burrow at +800 in the event that does happen.
