NFL Futures Picks: Predicting the 2019-20 Season
The countdown is on to September 5 — the day the NFL regular season officially gets underway! In between now and then, we take an in-depth look at what could happen, including future picks on the Super Bowl, MVP, and more. This is mandatory reading before laying down a futures wager!
With the regular season nearing, there are hundreds of NFL prop bets to pick from regarding NFL Futures — division winners, individual award winners, whether any team will go 0-16, etc. To help you out, we picked out the very four best that deserve your attention.
MVP Winner
After one of the best, if not the best, MVP seasons of all time, it's no surprise Patrick Mahomes has the best NFL futures odds to repeat again in 2020. Here's how online sportsbooks currently have the MVP odds:
- Patrick Mahomes (+550)
- Andrew Luck (+600)
- Aaron Rodgers (+1000)
- Baker Mayfield (+1100)
- Carson Wentz (+1200)
Everything is set-up for Mahomes to have another monster season — his second full season under center, a dangerous amount of weapons surrounding him, and Andy Reid, an offensive mastermind, dialing up the plays.
However, winning back-to-back MVP's is a long shot in itself. In the nearly sixty years the award has been given out, only three times has a player won the honor in consecutive years.
That history makes us go in a different direction. Instead, our pick is Wentz. People forget this man was on his way to a 2017 MVP before getting injured. Another injury last season has soured some opinions on Wentz, but not ours.
Two years removed from a Super Bowl win, the Eagles have fully re-loaded its offense. Over the offseason, Philly added DeSean Jackson and a pair of running backs — Jordan Howard and second-round pick Miles Sanders. Wentz will feast off those moves, on top of already having the best tight end duo in the league in Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert. Don't sleep on Wentz!
Pick: Wentz (+1200)
Most Regular Season Rushing Yards
This is a crapshoot. Between the contract holdouts and injury proness that accompanies the position, it feels like anyone could win this bet. But as is, these five rushers have the best lines:
- Saquon Barkley (+800)
- Ezekiel Elliott (+800)
- Todd Gurley (+1200)
- Derrick Henry (+1200)
- Nick Chubb (+1400)
Like the MVP pick, we're not sold on the consensus favorite. With the obvious talent deficiency facing New York, Barkley could be facing eight-man fronts all season long. Even for a player as talented as him, that's a tough situation to overcome.
Moving on, Elliott is one of those aforementioned holdouts, along with Melvin Gordon. After what happened with Le'Veon Bell a year ago, we've learned to never assume a player will just waltz back into his team after a money dispute.
This all leads us to our selection — Chubb. There was a lot to like from his rookie season in 2018, which included 996 yards on 5.2 yards per carry and ten total touchdowns.
There should be even more to like from Chubb in 2019. Cleveland made an already-dangerous offense even more dangerous by adding Odell Beckham Jr. That should open up more running lanes for Chubb en route to a league-leading season.
Offensive Rookie of the Year
Here's how bookies see this futures bet shaking out:
- Kyler Murray (+150)
- Josh Jacobs (+650)
- Dwayne Haskins (+800)
- Mecole Hardman (+1800)
- David Montgomery (+2000)
We feel a good prerequisite for this award is to be on a contending team. While Barkley was an exception last year, it does help being surrounded by good players, and what comes with that, more scoring opportunities. Under that criteria, that rules out the top-three favorites.
Either Hardman (Chiefs) or Montogmery (Bears) is a good selection here.
If we had to choose one, we'd have to go with Montogmery. We just believe he'll have more opportunities.
Hardman will be one of about five options for the Mahomes-led Chiefs. In Chicago, you can almost pencil in Montogmery to fill Jordan Howard's old every-down back role. And if you need any more convincing, consider three of the last four Rookie of the Year winners have been running backs.
Pick: Montgomery (+2000)
Super Bowl 54 Winner
You can't talk about NFL Future Odds without odds to win Super Bowl. As is, these five teams are the best Super Bowl Picks 2020 per bookies:
- New England Patriots (+700)
- Kansas City Chiefs (+800)
- New Orleans Saints (+850)
- Los Angeles Rams (+950)
- Philadelphia Eagles (+1200)
Remember how we picked Wentz to win the MVP earlier? Welp, that award is routinely given to the best player on the best team, which should tell you of our exact expectations of the Eagles.
Philly will run the table again in 2020. Head coach Doug Pederson is a disciple of the Chiefs' Reid, who many are latching onto for this pick. But unlike Reid, Pederson has proven he can win the big one, especially over Bill Belichick.
Of course, there's always the threat of another Patriots win. But Brady at 42 years old with no weapons outside of Julian Edelman gives us plenty of doubts. When their dynasty finally falters at year's end (which Brady's new contract extension is set up to do), we'll be talking about the start of a new one — the Eagles' dynasty.
Pick: Philadelphia (+1200)
