Pegasus World Cup Handicapping
You know where to bet the race. You’ve seen the list of contenders. Now, it is time to dive into the race and make your selection!
Keep in mind that this race is at Gulfstream. Middle to inside posts tends to do well on the Gulfstream dirt. In addition, the Gulfstream dirt has a well-earned reputation for playing well to horses who have some early speed. They don’t have to always make the front end, but if they are not within a few lengths of the early lead, it will be a lot harder to convert for more than a minor share.
Pegasus World Cup Favorites
The winning horse in the Pegasus tends to be one of the market leaders. In all five editions of the race, the winner has either been the first or second betting choice. This means it is critical to look into the two shortest-priced horses in the 2022 Pegasus World Cup, Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner #1 Knicks Go and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner #4 Life Is Good.
Knicks Go, the winner of the 2021 Pegasus, will be the bettors’ top choice off of his Classic win. However, he is mired on the rail, and he can run into trouble if he runs into another horse who has as much raw speed as he has early. And, if he runs into trouble, he tends to finish off the board.
Trouble for Knicks Go comes in the form of the likely second choice, Life Is Good. Life Is Good has a better draw than the favorite, and has at least as much early speed. He has never run a bad race in his career, always been right up front, and should be able to get the upper hand when the real running begins. He has not tried a mile and an eighth yet, but there is enough in his pedigree to suggest he can stay it.
Pegasus World Cup Value Horses
One of the best ways to make the Pegasus pay off is finding good exotic bets. Every year the Pegasus has been run, at least one horse at 10/1 odds or longer, has been able to run into the top three, and some years two horses do. Horses with odds over 30/1 have been able to run into the exacta and trifecta, so let’s find those longshot possibilities for this year.
Though #8 Endorsed has been doing most of his racing in sprints lately, his mile and eighth tries have been good. Both of them have resulted in second-place finishes in stakes races at Saratoga. He has the speed to work out a good trip on this forward-friendly track, as well as the stamina to stay on. And, Endorsed has never been worse than third in four Gulfstream Park tries.
#3 Stilleto Boy has made a name for himself hitting the board at big prices. Though his biggest win to date came in the Iowa Derby last year, he has since captured a pair of Grade 1 placings, including in the Awesome Again (G1) — a race at the same distance as the Pegasus. He has tactical speed and a well-proven ability to travel and run well at many different tracks.
#5 Empty Tomb has speed, and though his speed likely will not match the top two betting choices early, he is still fast enough to get a good spot and tactical enough to capture a share from just off the running. He has hit the board in five of his seven races going a mile and an eighth, and high-percentage Gulfstream expert Paco Lopez takes the reins on this longshot.
