The Saudi Cup is one of the newest entries to the world racing calendar. It was first run in 2020, and just got international Group 1 status this year. A proven dirt horse, Maximum Security, won its first running. However, in its second year, top turf horse Mishriff won the top prize.
Will Mishriff be able to repeat from the far outside gate? Will a dirt star-like Mandaloun, T O Keynes, or Midnight Bourbon upset him? Will a grass horse like Sealiway make the surface switch?

Top Saudi Cup Contenders
Mandaloun is the horse to beat in the 2022 Saudi Cup. A top American dirt horse, he comes in off of a smart victory over Midnight Bourbon in the Louisiana (G3). The distance suits him well, he has good tactical speed, and his Saudi-based ownership (Juddmonte) suggests he has been pointing to this specific race for a very long time.
For those who like to play longer shots, Art Collector has a good shot at bigger odds. He is a perfect 5-for-5 at a mile and an eighth. His gate should help him get a sweet outside stalking trip. And, his rider Luis Saez has already proven he can ride the King Abdulaziz dirt, given that he won the race two years ago.
Mishriff, last year’s winner, has a fighting chance to repeat. Though he has not run since last autumn, it is the same layoff off of which he came last year when he won the race. He has the versatility to work out a good trip no matter how the race unfolds, and he has already proven he can handle the footing over this racetrack.
Saudi Cup Exotic Possibilities
Though Midnight Bourbon will have no shortage of win backers, he makes more sense underneath. After all, even when he makes the lead (which he should do this time), someone else always seems to run him down. Last out, it was Mandaloun, who it may well be again. With no wins (but three underneath shares) at a mile and an eighth, he is a smarter play underneath again.
Two longer shots also have real appeal in the Saudi Cup exotics.
Emblem Road is a Saudi local who has three straight wins, including two over this course. With good middle-to-Classic American dirt breeding, he could be the live local who blows up the trifecta like Great Scot did last year. T O Keynes, the better of the two Japanese horses, is his country’s top dirt horse, and also a well-proven mile-and-an-eighth specialist.
