It’s that time of year again — the Masters at August National Golf Club in Georgia. This is perhaps the most famous golf tournament in the world and one you can’t miss out on betting on. Before the major championship begins on April 6, you’ll want to read this article to get all our 2023 Masters tournament bets to win!
2023 Masters Betting Preview
Before we get into our picks, we must preview what’s ahead at the 2023 Masters. Betting-wise, you have to start with the current Masters' odds. There are a lot of bets available this weekend, but we’ll be focusing on the outright winner. As it stands, these players are the biggest favorites to wear the green jacket, according to golf's most-used betting sites:
Golfer | |||
---|---|---|---|
Scottie Scheffler | +600 | +600 | +600 |
Rory McIlroy | +600 | +600 | +600 |
Jon Rahm | +850 | +850 | +850 |
Jordan Spieth | +1500 | +1500 | +1500 |
Patrick Cantlay | +1850 | +1850 | +1850 |
Justin Thomas | +1900 | +1900 | +1900 |
Cameron Smith | +2100 | +2100 | +2100 |
Xander Schauffele | +2100 | +2100 | +2100 |
We should mention LIV golfers will be in the field this weekend too. Names competing include Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooke Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, and Cameron Smith, among others. All in all, a whopping 18 LIV golf members will be competing (six of which have won the Masters before). Expect the PGA vs. LIV feud to be front and center this weekend.
Speaking of attention, a lot of it will be reserved for Tiger Woods as well. The 47-year-old is in the field and for perhaps the first time, Woods is speaking like he has borrowed time on the golf course. He recently admitted his leg “will never be the same” after a near-fatal car crash. He went on to say, “I don’t know how many more I have in me.” Look, we’re sure not betting on Woods to compete (his line to win is +4000) but we’ll be watching with a close eye in case this is his final hoorah at the major he’s won more at than any other (five career wins).
As for Augusta itself, there are some small changes this year. There’s a brand-new tee box, which brings the total distance to more than 7,500 yards for a par 72. Will it make a huge difference? In our opinion, no, but it’s worth calling out for bettors that value historical performances. If so, you'll want to account for this minor update.
Best Bets To Win 2023 Masters Tournament
Our approach to picking golf tourney winners remains the same: make more than one pick, especially in a major championship when everyone is bringing their A-game. That’s why we’ve made three selections for the 2023 Masters winner. Here’s who we think are the most worthy bets:
Scottie Scheffler
Honestly, you’d have to be crazy not to consider Scheffler here. He has everything — and we mean everything — going for him ahead of the Masters. For one, he’s the reigning champion here. In 2022, Scheffler held the lead firm in the final two days so it was a convincing victory. No one has gone back-to-back at Augusta since Woods did it in 2002, but our money is on Scheffler breaking the two-decade drought.
Never mind the recent history at the course, Scheffler is red hot period. The No. 1-ranked golfer in the world has finished in the top 15 in each of his last 10 PGA events. Not only that, but he has two wins — Phoenix Open and the Players Championship— in his last four stroke-play starts. In the two non-wins, Scheffler tied for fourth (Arnold Palmer Invitational) and made the semis of the other (WGC Dell Match Play) so he was in contention.
Cameron Smith
Remember when we mentioned the LIV vs. PGA feud earlier? Welp, LIV players are wearing branded shirts during practice, which is pouring gas on the fire. We don’t want to get too into the mud, but there has to be a chip on the shoulder of LIV players. They’ve been labeled “defectors” and criticized for making the jump to the new league. If there’s one LIV player that we think can show out and possibly win, it’s Smith.
Our confidence in Smith stems from his history at August. We mean, he’s a man absolute gamer. In four of his last five appearances at this major, Smith has finished in the top-10. At the very least, bettors should consider a prop bet on him to do so again. We’re going one step further though, and betting him to win outright.
Colin Morikawa
It feels like Morikawa is being overlooked, namely because he's off to a hot-and-cold start in 2023. On one hand, he's finished second (Tournament of Champions) and third (Farmers Insurance Open). On the other hand, he's also missed the cut twice. But we like the value of getting a two-time major winner at only +2300 odds. Morikawa has improved each time he's competed at August — from T-44 to T-18 to fifth overall last year. That's an uptrend worth aligning yourself to as a bettor.
