Who’s Playing At The 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters?
After what’s transpired the past few days, perhaps the better question to ask is who’s not playing at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters instead. That’s because there’s been a rash of withdrawals that’s thrown the whole event into a loop since Tuesday.
The most notable name out of the competition is Rafael Nadal. The all-time legend was tentatively scheduled to partake in his first match since injuring himself at the Australian Open. But he announced he’s not fit enough to return yet. Nadal would have likely been the betting favorite if he was healthy. “The King of Clay” has a whopping 73-6 record here (including a 46-match winning streak between 2005 and 2012) with 11 outright titles.
Another major player that’s a no-go is Carlos Alcaraz. The 19-year-old is off to a fast 2023, which was on full display during the Sunshine Double. Alcaraz won the title at Indian Wells and then qualified for the semis at the Miami Open. However, he announced he has hand and back pain, which will force him to sit out of this event.
And then there’s Felix Auger-Aliassime. A left knee injury will sideline him at Monte-Carlo. He’s not at the level of Nadal or Alcaraz, of course, but Auger-Aliassime is a sneaky mid-level betting play that won't be available. He reached the quarter-finals at Indian Wells and the third round in Miami before the injury.
So who is healthy and actually competing this week? Top entrants include Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune and Taylor Fritz. As it stands, odds have yet to be released by top tennis betting sites. However, we expect that to change once the draw becomes official on Friday, April 7. Still, expect the usual names to be favored to win:
Novak Djokovic | -120 | -125 | -120 |
Stefanos Tsitsipas | +600 | +600 | +600 |
Jannik Sinner | +900 | +1000 | +900 |
Casper Ruud | +1200 | +1200 | +1300 |
Daniil Medvedev | +1400 | +1400 | +1400 |
Holger Rune | +1400 | +1400 | +1400 |
Andrey Rublev | +1600 | +1600 | +1600 |
Best Bets To Win 2023 Monte-Carlos Masters
We’ll be making two bets on the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters winner. Even though odds aren’t available quite yet, you’re likely to get plus-money odds across the board. Cause of that, you can make at least two picks here and not kill your profits so long as one pans out. With that in mind, here are the players MOST deserving of a bet:
Stefanos Tsitsipas
Tsitsipas might very well be must-bet material. That’s because he’s won each of the past two Monte-Carlo events. First against Andrey Rublev and then Alejandro Davidovich Fokina — both wins came in straight sets too. For comparison's sake, Djokovic has only two career titles to his name here so Tsitsipas' recent success is nothing to scoff at.
Tsitsipas seems to bring his best at clay courts. Who could forget the 2021 Roland-Garros final run or even last year’s Rome Masters. The point is, this guy has to be one of your betting choices. He might be the best clay player in the field with Nadal being out.
Casper Rudd
Here’s another player who steps up on the clay surface. The Norwegian has nine career wins with eight of them being on clay. Famously, Rudd advanced to the 2022 French Open Final only to fall to Nadal. But without the Spaniard being in this event, Rudd's long-time thorn in the side isn’t there to stop him this time around. Rudd is a perfect alternative bet to pair with Tsitsipas — both young players with credentials on this surface type.
