Pegasus World Cup Best Bet
The best bet in the Pegasus World Cup is Stronghold. He won the Santa Anita Derby (G1) at 1 ⅛ miles last year, the same distance as the Pegasus. Though he was defeated in his final prep, that came in the seven-furlong Malibu against a serious sprinter. He is a route horse, not a sprinter, so treat that race like the prep it was.
Now that he stretches back out to a better distance, he can use tactical speed from a great draw to work out a good trip at a price. The post position draw benefits him, and he should be able to stay out of trouble, not lose too much ground, and show his best.
Pegasus World Cup Favorites
Locked is the likely favorite in the Pegasus World Cup, but at such a short price there are reasons to be skeptical. He is mired in an outside gate, something that usually leads to ground loss and trouble at Gulfstream. He looked great winning the one-turn Cigar Mile (G2) last out, but has never stretched out to 1 ⅛ before. Now, he has to do it against much more seasoned foes.
White Abarrio, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2023, looks like he is rounding back into top form. Though he was defeated last out in the Mr. Prospector (G3), that race was a one-turn affair and now he stretches back out to the kind of distance at which he is best. He also had a poor start last out; if he comes away from the gate better, he should get his trademark trip, tracking in range and making a rally.
Saudi Crown also shapes as a serious contender. Speed is always dangerous at Gulfstream. Though there are several in this field who can show pace, he shapes as the speed of the speed. As long as he can come away well from his near-inside gate, he should be able to get a ground-saving trip on the front end.
Pegasus World Cup Longshots
Consider both Crupi and Power Squeeze for underneath slots. Though Crupi is not usually a win type, this closer reliably fires and has proven he can rally into the exotics regularly, even at Gulfstream, where he was third in this race last year. Power Squeeze has a tough gate, but she has good tactical speed, stamina, and Gulfstream Park form at a big price.
