How To Bet The 2020 Players Championship
One of the last tune-ups before the PGA Grand Slam tourneys roll around is the Players Championship. But with $15 million in prize money — the most of any pro golf event — it’s far from a throwaway event. We have a complete betting preview to the 2020 event. Find out who our free betting pick to win is before tee time!
Days before tee time, here are the top-three The Players Championship picks to make, according to online sportsbook odds:
- Rory McIlroy (+750)
- John Rahm (+1200)
- Justin Thomas (+1400)
We'll analyze the PGA tournament shortly, but it'd be irresponsible of us not to bring up sportsbook sign-up deals first — you know, the ones that can earn you hundreds to thousands of dollars in free play. You're only a few clicks away from redeeming these awards so what are you waiting for?
Now, on to our The Players Championship 2020 predictions:
With Huge Prize On The Line, The Betting Field Is Packed
Bovada has full odds for the entire playing field, which is expected to be a whopping 144 players. Here are just a few notables names that are early contenders to win the tournament:
- Tommy Fleetwood (+2200)
- Dustin Johnson (+2500)
- Patrick Cantlay (+2500)
- Im Sung-jae (+2500)
- Brooks Koepka (+3300)
Absent from the event will be none other than Tiger Woods, who is dealing with a back injury. Nonetheless, plenty of big names remain and they'll be wrestling over an eye-popping $15 million in prize money — the largest single-event purse in professional golf, even more than a Grand Slam event. Per usual, the event winner will net an 18 percent stake of the prize, which amounts to $2.7 million.
How To Follow All The Action
The Players Championship tees off on Thursday, March 12. Hosting this year's event will be the TPC Sawgrass' Players Stadium Course in Ponte Verde Beach, Florida.
The first two rounds will air live from The Golf Channel between 1 and 7 pm EST. Live coverage on Saturday and Sunday shift to NBC. Cord-cutters can stream all four days on fuboTV and NBCSports.com.
Making The Winning Pick
It's no surprise why McIlroy is the overwhelming favorite. Beyond winning this very event in 2019, he's been on an absolute hot streak this year. He's finished top-five in seven straight events. Seven!
History is against McIlroy, however. No player that has won this event came back the following year and even placed top-10, little less win the whole thing again, since Adam Scott in 2005.
Regardless, Rory absolutely deserves a futures bet here based on his 2020 tear alone. But in a field this packed, you'd be smart to spread your money around to a few different players. Aside from hedging the bet, it'll make the event more fun to watch when you have multiple pros to root for.
Along with Rory, we think Fleetwood should also get your attention. Historically, he's been very good at this course. In three appearances, he's finished 41st, seventh, and fifth a year ago. He's trending up and could very well get over the hump this time around.
If for some reason you can only make one bet, we'd put it on Fleetwood over McIlroy. At +2200, those are bang-for-your-buck odds considering how he's played at TPC Sawgrass in years past.
Betting pick to make: Tommy Fleetwood (+2200)
