The $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff happens Saturday, November 2 at Del Mar Racetrack in sunny southern California. It covers 1 ⅛ miles on the dirt, and drew a field of the leading dirt route fillies and mares in the country. If you enjoy betting horse races, or you’re even curious, the Distaff and the entire Breeders’ Cup festival are one of the greatest wagering opportunities of the year!
Thorpedo Anna, the Kentucky Oaks hero last seen finishing a close second to Breeders’ Cup Classic contender Fierceness, is the likely favorite. She will be facing older horses for the first time, including Japan-based star Awesome Result and Raging Sea, who conquered Idiomatic last out. Other leading three-year-olds in the race include Sugar Fish and Candied.
Who will join a list of winners that includes stars like Bayakoa, Personal Ensign, Zenyatta, and Beholder? Keep reading to find out!

There is a better way to play the Breeders’ Cup Distaff: playing at an online sportsbook! Unlike on track, you can lock in your price just by placing a bet when you see a price that is better than your estimation of their odds of winning. Then, just watch the race with full confidence on the price you’ll get when you win!

Breeders' Cup Distaff Horse to Beat
Thorpedo Anna has been the star of the sophomore filly division and she has every right to keep her excellent season going in the Distaff. She has tactical speed, and as many races as she has won impressively, she doesn’t fold when she has to fight. She returns to her best distance for the Distaff, 1 ⅛ miles, and should be ready for the race that has been her autumn goal all along.
Breeders' Cup Distaff Contenders
Awesome Result has yet to race outside of Japan, but she has been impressive in seven starts there. In fact, she has yet to lose, despite facing double-digit field sizes in every start to date. That includes three victories at 1 ⅛ miles. Of course, this is a class test; she has yet to try group-level company yet. But, top rider Yutaka Take (her regular) keeps the faith, and just a few years ago another Japan based horse with less credentials, Marche Lorraine, upset this race.
Raging Sea has been running against good horses since she was a juvenile, but she has truly come around in the distaff division this autumn at age four. Two back she upset Idiomatic by a head, and last out she overcame a tough start to make a run, dig in, and find enough to win the Beldame (G2). She is five-for-seven at 1 ⅛ miles, meaning she should make a good late run again.
Breeders' Cup Distaff Exotics Horses
Sugar Fish, the up-and-coming California local, faltered in her first try against older but righted the ship last out in the Zenyatta (G2), rallying from last in a compact field to take the win. The pace in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff won’t be dizzying, but that win last out behind a slow pace was encouraging. If she repeats that effort, she fits. Of course that’s no guarantee, but she’ll be a long enough shot to consider that circumstance.
