Free UFC Betting Pick — Colby Covington versus Kamaru Usman
This welterweight title fight is a rematch of UFC 245 during the tail-end of 2019. That one ended with Usman retaining the gold with a fifth-round TKO of Covington, however, that fight was neck-and-neck. Through four rounds, one judge had it scored 38-38, another had Covington up 39-37, while the last judge gave Usman the 39-37 advantage — therefore, it was a deadlock tie. If we were being honest, we felt Covington was fighting slightly better before the decisive knockout.
With that said, two years is a long time ago (this was before the pandemic, for reference). Covington has fought once since then, dismantling a washed-up Tyron Woodley. Usman, on the other hand, has dominated the division with two wins versus Jorge Masvidal and one against Gilbert Burns. In other words, Usman has sharpened his skills against steeper competition than Covington.
The biggest and most noticeable improvement in Usman's fight game is his striking skills. It was on full display in the second go-round versus Masvidal in April, when he knocked him out cold in the second round. Masvidal doesn't go down easy (it was only the second KO loss of his long career) and Usman completely rocked him. It was an impressive display of power and precision from Usman's fists.
We're laying the hammer on Usman to win. If Conor McGregor's fall has taught us anything, it's that inactivity isn't good for a fighter. That will be Covington's biggest undoing against an all-timer at welterweight like Usman. It'll especially be felt in his chin, which weakens with age and inactivity. For prop bettors, you might want to wager that Usman wins by knockout.
Free UFC Betting Pick — Rose Namajunas vs. Zhang Weili
Another championship fight (strawweight), another rematch (UFC 261). Earlier this year, Namajunas dismantled the ex-champion Weili. A kick to the head just over one minute into the first round ended the first fight instantly, but despite that lopsided outcome, the online bookies are pegging this fight very close in the odds.
Let's not forget Weili's loss — especially how it happened — was a complete shock at the time. Before then, she had pulled off 20 straight victories. But Rose's stand-up, which is admittedly better, completely caught her off guard. The obvious question becomes, can Weili patch it up in six months' time?
We think so. Weili walked into that knockout blow. She was throwing a flurry of inside kicks, which opened herself up to the damaging leg kick. With more preparation and a better idea of what to expect from Namajunas, we believe Weili adjusts in the rematch and looks like her old dominant self again. In a slight upset, Weili regains the women's title.
Free UFC Betting Pick — Justin Gaethje vs. Michael Chandler
In recent months, the betting line has slowly shifted. It opened with Gaethje hovering around -140 to win but has since crept up to the -210 range. Odds-makers have liked Gaethje more and more in the fight lead-up and we have to agree.
Before meeting his fate versus Khabib Nurmagomedov (like every other fighter ever), Gaethje was pulverizing opponents. Three of his previous foes went out in the first round and the fourth was Tony Ferguson, who was never the same after the damage he sustained in a fifth-round TKO. Point is, Gathje has as good hands as anyone in the lightweight division.
We're not sure Chandler has the chin to withstand Gaethje's hands. Surely, he'll try to take the fight to the ground to minimize Gaethje's advantage, but then again, Justin was able to wrestle with an all-timer like Khabib for a bit before being overwhelmed. Our money is going on Gaethje here.
